What to see by car: Innsbruck
Some of the most breathtaking scenery in Austria can be found in the Tirol
region around Innsbruck. Igls is a quaint Tyrolean village overlooking Innsbruck
and offers an array of delightful pursuits for the more active visitor, including:
hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, tennis and paragliding. A number of cultural
events are held here in the summer.
Bergisel, situated just outside Innsbruck on Brenner Road, is a lovely forested
area that is ideal for hiking in the warmer season. By car, it's about 20 minutes
from the Wiltener Basilica, where you can see ski jumps which were built for
the 1964 and 1976 Olympic Winter Games. The panoramic view from the top of the
jumps is breathtaking.
A Renaissance palace that was built by Archduke Ferdinand II of Austria in
the 16th century lies 3kms southeast of the heart of Innsbruck on the edge of
the Mittelgebirgsterrace. The upper castle houses a small, fine collection of
medieval sculpture and a portrait gallery with paintings from the 14th to 18th
centuries. Black-and-white frescoes adorn the wall of the inner courtyard. The
lower castle was planned and constructed by the archduke as a museum for his
various collections of arms, armour, art and books - all of which can still
be seen today.
An essential daytrip for those travelling by car is northeast from Innsbruck
on the A12 highway to the town of Wattens where a unique display of crystals
can be seen at the Swarovski Kristallwelten. Nestled at the foot of the Austrian
Alps, this amazing place is home to world famous Swarovski crystal. Tours include
a visit to a room which has walls covered with shining crystals and a view of
a large horse decorated with crystals. You'll also have the chance to purchase
crystal souvenirs or jewellery.
The traditional village of Ehrwald, on a beautiful plateau not far from Innsbruck,
offers unique old style Tyrolean charm. It is situated near the base of the
Zugspitze, the highest peak in Germany at 2,961m, and there are astounding views
from the peak for those brave enough to climb it.
