Travelling to Salzburg

If you're travelling to Salzburg by car, or decide to explore the country's network
of roads, then it's comforting to know that most of the roads are safe and uncrowded.
Routes south through the Alps afford great views but can be exasperatingly slow
going; the highway from Vienna is much quicker. Access through Germany is also
easy with expedient border formalities and the German autobahn.
Salzburg can be reached from all directions by good roads, including Autobahn
A8 from the west (Munich), A1 from the east (Vienna), and A10 from the south.
Route 20 comes into Salzburg from points north and west, and Route 159 serves
towns and cities from the southeast.
It's convenient and comfortable to take the train to Salzburg. The city is
well served by IC (InterCity) and EC (EuroCity) train services. The trip from
Switzerland via the St Anton valley is unforgettably scenic.
Bundesbuses depart and arrive from outside the Hauptbahnhof but are more suited
to local travel. The buses are relatively cheap; and, although they may not
be as comfortable as the train, they do provide the option of taking off in
any direction at your whim, usually without reservation hassles.
Even though Salzburg isn't very large, it is home to an international airport
with scheduled flights from European and Austrian destinations. There is a busier
airport in Munich, only two hours away. The European hub in Frankfurt is also
easily reachable by high-speed train. However, the majority of visitors invariably
arrive at the airports in either Salzburg or Vienna. Buses and taxis run pretty
regularly to and from both airports to the city centre.
