Geography of Salzburg
    
The enchanting city of Salzburg lies in the heart of Europe. The city stands on
the banks of the Salzach River and is the capital of Land Salzburg. A former Roman
town of Juvavum, it is set against a panoramic mountain range. The Austrian alpine
country surrounds Salzburg, so exploring the hinterlands is essential if you want
the definitive experience.
Land Salzburg is filled with deep valleys, winding rivers, lakes and rolling
foothills, as well as some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Austria. The
spectacular Krimml Falls is the highest in Europe.
It was the musical, The Sound of Music that really presented the glory of Austria's
clear alpine air and blue mountain lakes to the rest of the world. You can begin
by exploring the Salzkammergut lake country, a narrow corridor in Land Salzburg
between Bavaria and Upper Austria.
Many parts of Salzkammergut, which means 'domain of the salt office', grew
prosperous from mining salt and a little gold. Although there are often excursions
leaving from Salzburg, it can be much more fun and less expensive to travel
there on your own.
This region is also attractive to sports enthusiasts; with such celebrated
spas as Badgastein and venerated ski resorts such as Zell am See, Kaprun, Saalbach
and Hinterglemm. Relax at a lakeside resort like the one at St Gilgen, or alternatively
lounge at a mountain hotel where the air is clear and the stars protrude from
the night sky.
The ski season begins about 10 days before Christmas and usually lasts until
Easter or beyond, depending on snow conditions. Skiing on some of the lofty
plateaus is possible year round. Kaprun, Saalbach and Zell am See are well known
and rather expensive resorts.
Salzburg is only a stone's throw away from the Austrian-German frontier, so
it's convenient for exploring many of the nearby attractions in Bavaria. On
the northern slopes of the Alps, the city is at the intersection of traditional
European trade routes and is well served today by air, autobahn and rail.
