What to see by car: Salzburg

Renting a car in Salzburg is highly recommended, as the nearby alpine region offers
fantastic scenery that is easily accessed and explored, even by the novice driver.
A good daytrip would be to Innsbruck and the St Anton valley.
Several kilometres south of Salzburg is Hellbrunn Palace, located at the foot
of Hellbrunn Mountain. This palatial and prestigious palace was built in 1615
with an Italian style discernible throughout the palace. It features an amazing
Wasserspeiele (water park), designed to engulf visitors with water emitted from
secret fountains and ponds.
The Eisriesenwelt Hohle (Ice Caves) in Werfen are ostensibly some of the largest
ice caves in the world, attracting scores of visitors every day when open to
the public. The interiors are enormous, and visitors on the limited tours can
discover some the bizarre ice formations inside. Open only during the summer,
the caves are about an hours drive south of Salzburg.
The Bad Dorrnberg Salt Mine in Hallein has a history that dates back to the
Celtic settlement; mining activity here has been traced back as far as 4,500
years. The lucrative mines afforded Salzburg some prosperity, and today Hallein
is a unique tourist attraction offering an insightful look at salt mining.
There are an abundance of lakes in the Salzkammergut lakeland district but
the Wolfgangsee Lake is probably the most delectable. Situated just east of
the city, it's frenetic in the summer months and packed with tourists, particularly
from the resorts of St Wolfgang and St Gilgen. Rising behind St Gilgen is the
distinctive Zwolferhorn Mountain.
