What to see by foot: Vienna

The architecture of Vienna is somewhat of a treasure trove; the city's buildings
and streets are redolent of centuries of history. Although it suffered extensive
damage during WWII, Vienna has since gone through an assiduous reconstruction
and its charm is seemingly unspoilt. All this makes Vienna a natural site for
rewarding walking tours.
Begin at St Stephan's Cathedral, where you can ascend the south tower for a
panoramic view of the city. This is where you can almost palpably feel the history
beneath your feet. Constructed in 12th - 14th centuries, the cathedral is a
cultural and visual landmark.
Next, walk over to the Hofburg Palace, which features many blocks and multiple
entrances; it was started in 1279 and new additions were continued until 1913.
Main attractions here are: Kaiserappartments (Imperial Apartments); Silberkammer;
Schatzkammer (Imperial Treasury); and Neue Burg (New Castle). The palace takes
up many square city blocks and the main entrance is Michaelerplatz.
Vienna is inexorably connected to music, and when visiting the city, you shouldn't
miss the Staatsoper (State Opera House). Opened in 1869 with a performance of
Mozart's Don Giovanni, this is one of the most important opera houses in the
world. Enjoying one of the regular performances at night is the best way to
appreciate the Staatsoper.
The Akademie der Bildenden Kunste (Academy of Fine Arts) is not the most palatial
of art galleries, but is home to a choice collection of paintings from the 15th
- 17th centuries. Some of the major attractions include: Last Judgement by Hieronymus
Bosch; Self Portrait by Van Dyck; Venice Scenes by Guardi; and some works by
Rembrandt, Rubens, Botticelli and Cranach the Elder.
Alternatively, you can visit the much better Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum
of Fine Arts). Across from Hofburg Palace, this giant edifice houses many of
the prestigious art collections gathered over time by the Habsburgs as they
added new territories to their empire. One highlight is the fine collection
of ancient Egyptian and Greek art. The museum also has works by many of the
great European masters, such as Velásquez and Titian.
