What to see by car: Vienna

Hiring a car is a must as it affords the chance to explore attractions such as:
the Vienna Woods; the pleasant villages that run along the Danube; the vineyards
of the Wachau; and the small province of Burgenland which lies between Vienna
and the Hungarian border.
The historic and embattled area of Lower Austria was once heavily fortified,
as the remaining hundreds of fortresses and castles will testify. The medieval
Kuenringer and Babenburger dynasties had their hereditary estates here. The
region is also home to an abundance of vineyards, as well as historic monasteries,
churches and abbeys. Music festivals and classical and contemporary theatre
can be seen in the summer months.
Lower Austria consists of five distinct districts. The Wienerwald, or Vienna
Woods, surrounds Vienna like a green encompassing mist. The district of Alpine
Lower Austria is situated an hours drive south of Vienna and features mountains
rising up to 2,134m.
The foothills of the Alps begin about 48kms west of Vienna and continue to
the borders of Styria and Upper Austria. This area has a plethora of outdoor
swimming pools, and there are nine chairlifts to the higher peaks such as Ötscher
and Hochkar.
For those interested in outdoor pursuits, there is pastoral hiking throughout
the district Waldviertel-Weinviertel. The area is also well known for its wine-making
and a visit to some of the old wine cellars is rewarding. Another district,
Wachau-Nibelungengau, has both historical and cultural significance. It's a
rich land of ancient castles and palaces, abbeys and monasteries, as well as
vineyards. This area on the banks of the Danube begins about 64kms west of Vienna.
The easternmost province of Austria is called the Burgenland. It's a modest
border region, formed in 1921 from German-speaking areas of what was once Hungary.
After WWI, Burgenland voted to join Austria; although when the vote was taken
in 1919 its capital, Ödenburg (now called Sopron), chose to remain with
Hungary. Sopron is located west of Lake Neusiedl (Neusiedler See) and is a very
popular retreat for the Viennese.
Eisenstadt, which is the region's capital, was the home of the composer, Joseph
Haydn. Each summer there's a festival at Mörbisch, using Lake Neusiedl,
the only steppe lake in central Europe, as a theatrical backdrop. In the summer
months it's delightful to explore the lake by motorboat and many activities
are on offer there.
