Historical interest: Vienna

Vienna's long and sinuous history has undeniably been largely due to its geographical
position. The city is situated on the Danube amid the trade routes linking the
prosperous ports of northern Germany with Italy. Located at the junction of three
great civilisations (Slavic, Teutonic, and Roman/Italian), it was transformed
into something of a cauldron where war, art and culture intermixed over many bloody
centuries.
Vienna was established as a military camp called Vindobona by the Romans in
the 1st century AD. The civilian settlement began in the 3rd century, but with
the decline of the Romans in the 4th - 5th centuries, the city itself went into
decline.
Vienna was first called by its present name in the 9th century when it was
having a tumultuous time with Magyar expansion. The Magyar threat was contained
in the battle of Lechfeld in 955 AD. The Austrian magraves, who were the dukes
of Bavaria at that time, transferred their residence to Vienna and founded its
oldest monastery, Sankt Maria zu den Schotten (St Mary of the Scots).
It's thought that Vienna was built around 1200 AD and was also one of the major
cities of the empire (after Cologne). The Habsburg Empire in Vienna strongly
advocated the development of art, culture and education. Countless attempts
to seize the city were made by the Turks in the 16th and 17th centuries. Though
they could never control the city, the Turks certainly had an effect, changing
the physical structure of Vienna.
The history of Vienna following this period was even more turbulent, consisting
of a series of dramatic episodes encompassing wars, victories, deaths, destruction,
birth of a republic and foreign occupation. It is a credit to the city and its
inhabitants that, even in these violent times, transformations continued in
the fields of art, architecture, music, painting, literature and theatre.
