What to see by car: Antwerp
As Belgium is such a small country, all the main towns and cities are within easy
reach of each other. Thus, with a rental car, you can easily take in Brussels,
Bruges and Ghent during a short excursion from Antwerp.
Brussels, the capital not only of Belgium but also of the European Union, lies
just 45kms to the south of Antwerp. The city was founded over 1,000 years ago
and there is plenty to see. While French is spoken in the south of Belgium and
Dutch in the north, both languages are spoken in Brussels, and all street signs
are bilingual. The city has an incredible mix of architecture, from Gothic cathedrals
and churches to art nouveau and art deco houses.
Bruges, southwest of Antwerp and located between Brussels and the country's
coastline, is the capital of West Flanders and one of the country's most important
towns, with over 100,000 inhabitants. Most tourists breeze in and out on daytrips
from Brussels or Antwerp, but an overnight stay is worthwhile. There is a definite
medieval feel to the city's streets, even though much of what you see is 19th
century renovation. Ghent, Belgium's fourth-largest city, with a population
of 250,000, is lesser known than Bruges, but many of those who visit decide
that this is the gem of both Flanders and Belgium. Though parts of the city
are modern, the authorities have done a praiseworthy job of keeping the historic
areas intact.
The city centre is a showcase of medieval Flemish wealth and commercial success,
and there is a bustling harbour linked to the sea by the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal.
While in town, be sure to take a look around the flower nurseries. Ghent has
achieved fame for its beautiful begonias and azaleas, which are sold all over
the world.
