What to see by foot: Bruges
Bruges is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in all of Europe, and this
makes it a very popular destination for tourists. There are two main squares in
the city, the Grote Markt (Market Place) and the Burg, which are situated close
together and make a good focus for an exploration of the town on foot. The Belfry
Tower and Cloth Hall, and the Provincial Court, as well as stylish shops and restaurants
border the Grote Markt. The small Burg square is the town's administrative centre.
The most striking building in the Grote Markt is the Belfry Tower, which stands
83m high. It was originally built in 1240, though it was destroyed by fire in
1280 and then rebuilt. As in other cities of the Low Countries, these towers
were used as watchtowers and to store important documents. These days, visitors
can climb to the top to enjoy the expansive view.
On the north side of the square is the neo-Gothic Provincial Court and in the
centre of the square is a statue of Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck, heroes
of the Flemish emancipation from the French.
The nearby Burg is a smaller square surrounded by some of the town's most important
administrative buildings. In the days of marauding Normans and Vikings, this
was the site of a castle which has long since disappeared. Today, the square
is still home to the Gothic Town Hall, the Renaissance Old Civil Registry and
the Baroque Deanery. Most of the buildings are so well preserved that a stroll
round Bruges is like stepping into the pages of a history book.
While in the area, it is worth taking a look at the Bruges Diamond House, where
you can see a fantastic display of diamond jewellery in De Steur, an elegantly
restored building that dates back to 1518. Bruges is believed to have traded
in diamonds long before the trade became established in Antwerp or Amsterdam.
