What to see by car: Bruges
 
Distances between towns are very short in Belgium, making it possible to take
in several of the country's historic towns by car. It takes less than an hour
to reach Antwerp, Ghent and Brussels from Bruges, so you shouldn't miss the opportunity.
Ghent, Belgium's fourth-largest city, with a population of 250,000, is lesser
known than Bruges, but many who visit decide that this is the most beautiful
place in both Flanders and Belgium. Though parts of the city are modern, the
authorities have done an excellent job of keeping the historic areas intact.
The city centre is a product of medieval Flemish wealth and commercial success,
and there is a bustling harbour linked to the sea by the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal.
While in town, be sure to take a look around the flower nurseries. Ghent has
achieved fame for its beautiful begonias and azaleas which are sold all over
the world.
Brussels, the capital not only of Belgium but also of the European Union, lies
farther inland from Ghent. The city was founded over 1,000 years ago and there
is plenty to see. While French is spoken in the south of Belgium and Dutch in
the north, both languages are spoken in Brussels, and all street signs are bilingual.
The city has an incredible mix of architecture, from Gothic cathedrals and churches
to art nouveau and art deco houses.
Antwerp, near the northeast corner of the country, is Belgium's second-largest
city and has some very impressive architecture. The two main squares worth visiting
are the Grote Markt, with the impressive Town Hall and Brabo Fountain; and the
Groenplaats, or Green Square, a favourite spot for tourists to refresh themselves
in the surrounding cafés. Shoppers should not miss the town's main shopping
street, the Meir, while art aficionados should drop by the house of Peter Paul
Rubens, which is just off the Meir.
