Mini guide to Brussels
    
One of Europe's only bilingual capital cities, Brussels continues to grow and
thrive as the undisputed crossroads of Europe. With more than 1,000 years of
history behind it, the city offers many fascinating sights to visit. Brussels
boasts a beautiful historic market square and the highest concentration of restaurants
in the world.
Brussels is divided into two areas known as the Lower and Upper Towns. The
Lower Town, with its medieval town centre, was built around the Grand-Place
and its many cobbled streets lead to such attractions as Ste Catherinen, Ilot
Sacre and Marolles. The Upper Town is very different in atmosphere and appearance,
featuring wide boulevards, major museums and upmarket shopping areas, especially
in Sablon and Ave Louise.
Brussels is an excellent starting point for exploring north-western Europe.
There are also lots of towns and cities near Brussels to visit. A short drive
or train trip gets you to Brugge, which is probably Belgium's favourite tourist
destination.
The Ardennes covers almost half of Belgium and is only an hour away from Brussels.
In this area, beautiful wooded hillsides plunge into deep ravines riddled with
caves, while small towns and villages gain shelter under steep hillsides, and
rivers wind their way through undulating countryside.
Being at the heart of Europe, Brussels is an easy city to travel to. The Brussels
motorway (the Petit Ring) surrounds the city centre and is a good reference
point for visitors who are unfamiliar the city's roads. Brussels offers good
European train connection services; Gare du Midi is the city's main train station.
If you're travelling by air, Zaventem Airport is 14kms northeast of Brussels.
It mainly services European destinations, so if you are travelling from elsewhere,
it may be better to fly into Paris, London or Frankfurt before transferring
to Brussels by train or bus.
