Geography of Brussels
    
An aerial view of Brussels would show a surprising amount of greenery and water,
all not too far from the heart of the city. In Ixelles, you'll find the more
quiet and tranquil part of busy Brussels, featuring: the beautiful Bois de la
Cambre (forest), parks, ponds and the Abbey de la Cambre, which was founded
in 1196 by the Sisters of the Cistercian Order.
The Ardennes comprises almost half of Belgium and is only an hour away from
Brussels. In this area, beautiful wooded hillsides plunge into deep ravines
riddled with caves, while small towns and villages find shelter underneath steep
hillsides, and rivers wind their way through undulating countryside.
Brussels is an excellent starting point for exploring north-western Europe;
and there are also lots of towns and cities near Brussels to visit. A short
drive or train trip gets you to Brugge, probably Belgium's favourite tourist
destination. This medieval town hasn't changed much since it was a port city
back in the 1300s.
About 8kms east of Brussels lies the 220-hectare park of La Hulpe with its
wonderful old castle crowning the top of a lovely, expansive lawn bordered with
trees. Given to Belgium by the Solvay family, La Hulpe is a great place to walk
or have a picnic, especially since there's no entry fee.
Brussels is officially bilingual; all official announcements and street names
are in French and in Flemish. However, almost everybody understands and speaks
English, and you will hear many more languages when strolling through the city
centre.
Belgium has a reasonably gentle climate, and no season is too severe. Summertime
temperatures average between 12 - 23C; in winter the temperature is between
0 - 6C. The weather in Belgium can change remarkably quickly - rain and drizzle
can set in at any time but are especially common during the months of April
and November.
