What to see by foot: Brussels

Walking is always the best way to experience a foreign city. Brussels' city
centre is compact and easy to explore on foot - the large crowds usually found
in London and Paris are not evident here. Brussels' busy streets invite visitors
to browse.
Several types of goods are associated with Brussels, including: cheeses, lace,
art reproductions and antiques. There are big shopping complexes downtown and
stores of various kinds throughout central Brussels. Wear comfortable shoes
though, as there are a lot of cobblestone streets.
Brussels was originally built around the Grand-Place, which is a body of public
and private buildings dating mainly from the late 17th century. The architecture
provides a vivid illustration of the level of social and cultural life of the
period, and is pleasingly distinctive. Miscellaneous events, such as expositions,
are held in the Grand-Place.
Described by some as Greco-Roman and others as Assyro-Babylonian, the Palace
of Justice is located on what was once Gallows Hill. For an incredible view
of Brussels, try climbing to the top of the Palace of Justice's high cupola.
Alternatively, Belgium's parliament can be found by walking through the Parc
de Bruxelles. This park connects the Palace Royale and the Palais de Nations,
where Belgium's parliament meets.
Rue des Bouchers (street of the butchers), in the medieval centre of Brussels,
is famous for the fact that every house on the street is a restaurant. It is
just a few minutes walking distance from the Grand-Place and the central market
square of Brussels. The square is said to be the most beautiful in the world,
and is dominated by the magnificent 15th century town hall, with its hundreds
of little statues.
