What to see by car: Brussels
    
The region immediately around Brussels has many interesting sights, and since
Belgium is so small, it's possible to reach most local destinations by car.
Nosing around the used book and antique print shops in Redu is one of the best
reasons to venture outside of Brussels for the afternoon. Redu is a tiny village
located about 45 minutes southeast of Brussels by car. The place is not much
more than a cluster of dozens of bookstores, cafés and restaurants, surrounded
by farm fields and rolling hills.
Anchored on the outskirts of Brussels, the Atomium is one of the most recognisable
landmarks in Brussels. It was built for the 1958 World Fair by engineer André
Waterkeyn and is a model of an iron molecule, blown up 165 billion times. The
Atomium has become a symbol of post-war progress. Take the high-speed elevator
to the top ball for a breathtaking view of the city.
Cantillon in Anderlecht is the last of the family-run lambic breweries around
Brussels and the best place to appreciate why beer connoisseurs love Belgium.
The brewery is just south of the city and produces lambics - sparkling light
beers that are brewed through a 3-year process. Free samples are included in
the tour.
Also located on the outskirts of Brussels, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts houses
Belgium's premier collection of fine art, exhibiting works by Pieter Breugel
the Elder, Rubens and the Belgian surrealists. It is divided into two sections,
offering ancient and modern art. You will probably need to spend a full day
here to see everything on offer.
During winter months, the Ardennes in southeastern Belgium is the nearest skiing
resort, and offers cross-country skiing as its main attraction.
