Historical interest: Brussels

First written confirmation of the existence of Brussels was given in 977 AD,
when the German Emperor Otto II gave Low Lorraine to Carl of France. In those
days, the island was known as the Island of Saint Gorik. Carl of France decided
to build a fortress on the island and Brussels was born.
The last foreign emperor of Brussels and the present Belgian kingdom was Dutch
Emperor William I. He had to leave the country in 1830 when successful struggles
for independence erupted in Brussels.
On July 21, 1831, the first Belgian king, Leopold I, ascended the throne and
Brussels became the capital of the new Kingdom of Belgium. Many international
congresses were organised and scientific organisations were founded during this
time. Foreign artists, philosophers, scientists and many more, found their way
to Brussels; this influx included Karl Marx, Victor Hugo and Proudhon, among
others.
WWI and WWII were only able to stop the further development of Brussels for
a short while. After WWII, Belgium was divided into two semi-independent regions:
Flanders and the Walloon provinces. Brussels became a district with its own
government (albeit with restricted powers).
Brussels also became the capital of the European Union. Moreover, NATO decided
to locate its headquarters near Brussels (at Evere). These institutions, coupled
with an array of industries, gave Brussels an enormously positive economic injection.
The negative side of this was that Brussels had a very difficult time trying
to find a balance between retaining the historic spirit of the city and allowing
modern influences to enter. However, Brussels has achieved and continued to
maintain that balance for years.
