Mini guide to Ghent
The capital of the East Flanders Province, Ghent is a thriving industrial and
commercial port town. With prepossessing architecture, and many historical monuments,
it's a town worth visiting after you've exhausted its sister city Bruges.
When in Ghent, it's imperative you visit Sint-Baafskathedraal (St Bavo's Cathedral)
on Sint-Baafsplein. The exterior is of Gothic and Baroque architecture, while
the interior has an opulence of paintings, sculptures and tombs, all of which
are of great historical value. Another noteworthy site is the Gravensteen (Castle
of the Counts), which is a macabre-looking castle that looms over Ghent like
a dark mythological portent.
When on a walking tour of the town, don't miss Belfort en Lakenhalle (Belfry
and Cloth Hall). Adjacent to the cathedral, the Cloth Hall and Belfry Tower
together make for an eye-catching mix of medieval architecture. Flowers seem
ubiquitous in Ghent, reminding the visitor that the city is a leader in the
horticultural industry.
Ghent is renowned for its lively atmosphere, frenetic nightclubs and a dangerously
varied selection of beer. A night at De Witte Leeuw, with its quirky entourage
of customers and inexhaustible beer supply, should prove enjoyable.
Ghent is only 45kms south of Bruges. If you haven't yet visited Bruges, then
you must make it there on a daytrip. The city is stunning and features historic
buildings of varied architectural styles, from medieval times to the 19th century.
Additionally, the glorious canals wrap around the city like a bow.
By car to Ghent, take the E40 from Brussels and Bruges, and then the E17 from
Antwerp. The main train station, Gent Sint-Pieters, is on Koningin Maria-Hendrikaplein,
1.6kms from the city centre; from there you'll find frequent tram connections
to the city centre. The bus station is next to Sint-Pieters train station. Brussels
International Airport serves European and international carriers. A 32-minute
train ride from Brussels will put you in Ghent.
