What to see by car: Ostend
Belgium is small in size but big in history, so that an exploration of several
historic Belgian towns in the region is not only enticing but also quite feasible
with the help of a hired car. Brussels, Ghent and Bruges are all less than 100kms
away and swift, efficient roads make the journey short and painless.
Brussels is not only of the capital of Belgium but also of the European Union
and of NATO. The city was founded over 1,000 years ago and there is plenty to
see. While French is spoken in the south of Belgium and Dutch in the north,
both languages are spoken in Brussels, and all street signs have bilingual signs.
The city has a wonderful mix of architecture, from Gothic cathedrals and churches
to art nouveau and art deco houses.
Ghent is lesser known than Brussels or Bruges, but many tourists who visit
see it as the most beautiful place in both Flanders and Belgium. Though parts
of the city are modern, the authorities have kept the historic areas intact.
The city centre still has an aura of medieval Flemish wealth and commercial
success, and there is a busy harbour linked to the sea by the Ghent-Terneuzen
Canal. While in town, take a look around the flower nurseries, as Ghent has
achieved fame for the beauty of its begonias and azaleas.
Bruges, the nearest big town to Ostend, is the capital of West Flanders and
one of the country's most important towns, with over 100,000 inhabitants. Most
tourists breeze in and out on day rips from Brussels or Antwerp, but an overnight
stay can be a bonus because you get the town to yourself for a while. There
is a definite medieval feel to the city's streets, even though much of what
you see is a 19th century renovation.
