Geography of Cuba

Situated in the tropical Caribbean Sea, Cuba has two distinct seasons: the rainy
season from May to October, and the cooler dry season from November to April.
The annual hurricane season is from June to October, when the risk of storms is
at its greatest.
Major geographical features on the island include the Parque Nacional Cinega
de Zapata, a massive expanse of swamp, mangroves and wetlands rich with flora
and fauna. The area draws thousands of fishermen, birdwatchers and naturalists.
The other major geographical site is the Sierra Maestra mountains, the highest
and longest mountain range in Cuba. The Sierra Maestra is full of lore for Cubans;
it's where Fidel Castro and his band of rebels hid out and waged guerrilla warfare
against the Batista government in the 1950s. Stretching across three provinces,
its peaks are almost on top of the rocky southern coastline.
The Gran Parque Nacional Sierra Maestra and Parque Nacional de Turquino are
perfect for hikers and nature lovers. Nature lovers can also head for Baracoa,
Cuba's first settlement. The oyster-shaped bay, ten rivers, thick tropical vegetation
and distinctive flat-topped mountain of El Yunque, have made UNESCO grant it
a world biosphere reserve status.
Hikers will also enjoy Parque Nacional Topes de Collantes, where they can walk
among the dense pine forest and waterfalls which cover the mountains of the
Sierra del Escambray. The caves and limestone formations of the Vinales Valley,
and sulphur springs and lakes of Las Terrazas also draw nature lovers in droves.
