What to see by car: Cuba

Cuba is a wonderful island to explore by car: it boasts good roads, spectacular
beaches, historic cities, a vibrant capital, and isolated mountains and sugar
plantations.
Must-see stops on an island which has enough sights to merit a year of exploration
include the old town of Trinidad. The town is designated as an historic site;
it is easy to see why when you wander through the winding streets and gaze at
the pastel-shaded residences and churches. It is one of the most impressive
colonial towns in the Americas, and its major attraction is the 18th centuryMuseo
Romantico situated on the main square.
Other colonial towns worth exploring include: Camaguey, with its Plaza San
Juan de Dios, complete with over a dozen ancient churches; and Santiago de Cuba,
home of the original Spanish settlement on the island. The 1515 mansion built
by Diego Velazquez still exists and today houses colonial furnishings dating
from the 16th century.
The capital of Havana, and in particular its old town, shouldn't be missed.
You can find a range of attractions in this charming city, including: colonial
architecture, cobblestone plazas, historic forts, monuments to revolutionaries,
live salsa bands, and the souvenir heaven of Calle Tacon market.
To follow in Fidel Castro's footsteps and see where the guerrilla war was waged
and won, visit the Sierra Madre mountains. You can trek through remote cloud
forest up to the Comendancia de la Plata - the base from where Castro led his
revolutionaries.
For two truly spectacular beaches, visit Playa Paraíso and Playa Sirena.
These two connected beaches run the length of Cayo Largo del Sur, and are quiet
and largely underdeveloped expanses of fine white sand.
