Mini guide to Mexico

Mexico is a popular destination with travellers from all over the world. The
country lures visitors with its sunshine, crystal-white beaches, mountains,
volcanoes, jungles, exotic wildlife, folk art and the breathtaking remains of
ancient cultures. Mexico can also provide a budget holiday, though you may have
to get out of the popular resort areas to enjoy big savings.
Mexico City is a sprawling metropolis comprised of Aztec, colonial and modern
architecture, parks, gardens and canals. Cento Historico forms the heart of
the city, along with Plaza de la Constiticion. The area is loaded with museums
full with ancient Aztec and Mayan artefacts and also has many galleries.
Two southern suburbs, Coyoacan and San Angel are charming with their narrow
cobblestone streets, colonial houses, cafés and generally festive atmosphere
- especially with the Bazar Sabado every Saturday. Daytrips to the ancient and
impressive sights at Xochimilco, Teotihuacán and Tlatelolco are an absolute
must.
Mexico lies at the southern extreme of North America and is bordered by the
Pacific Ocean to the west and south, and by the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean
to the east. Its northern border is shared with the USA; and to the south it
borders Guatemala and Belize.
Mexico is huge and has several gateways, depending on whether you're headed
for the Pacific coast, Caribbean, the North or Mexico City. With the exception
of the Baja and Tijuana, most visitors to Mexico arrive by air and there are
more than 30 international airports, all well serviced by North American carriers.
