Hotels in Larnaca
What to see by foot: Larnaca
Larnaca, with its glorious Mediterranean climate, excellent beaches and proximity
to numerous archaeological sites, has much to offer in the way of tourist attractions.
Larnaca Bay itself is graced with a long, white stretch of sand blending into
its blue waters, and good weather almost all year round.
For those wanting to head directly to the beach, there is a newly-renovated
oceanfront promenade offering great entertainment in the form of bars and restaurants.
By night this area becomes a lively hub of activity; while by day it is perfect
for a lazy lunch with a great view.
The indoor market is a shopper's delight, with an assortment of fine copper
and silverware to choose from. However, if history and culture are what you
crave, head for the modern District Archaeological Museum, which provides a
marvellous summation of the area's past in its displays featuring ceramic items,
tools, coins, scarabs and lamps.
Larnaca Fort, situated on the seafront, is one of Larnaca's ancient attractions.
It is strongly connected to the region's history, having originally been built
as protection from invaders and then used as a prison in the early years of
British rule.
St Lazarus Church, which is located in the centre of town, is not only aesthetically
pleasing but also imbued with an interesting past. The story goes that after
Lazarus was resurrected by Jesus, he came to Larnaca, where he lived for 30
years. Supposedly, his remains were discovered on the site of the church in
890, and were then transferred to his final resting place in Marseilles, France.
In the northwest of Larnaca are the ruins of ancient Kition, as the area was
called in Old Testament times. Here you can see the remains of five temples,
and the lower part of the northern city walls, constructed of monstrous stones.
