What to see by foot: Limassol
Limassol, situated on the southern coast of Cyprus, is often referred to as the
'Paris of the Mediterranean' because of its European atmosphere, sidewalk cafés
and stylishness.
The city has a variety of sandy beaches to choose from and a wide selection
of exciting night spots. It is also known for its vibrant festivals. During
Carnival, the week before Lent, the streets become alive with music, dancing
and parades. The Wine Festival transforms the town for a week in September.
Richard the Lionheart is said to have married Queen Berengaria of Navarre in
an extravagant celebration that took place in Limassol 1191. Limassol Castle
dates back to the 14th century and today houses the Medieval Museum of Cyprus,
with exhibits including ancient pottery and tombstones.
The Archaeological Museum contains a fascinating assortment of artefacts from
the Neolithic to Roman periods. The Folk Art Museum, located in a restored mansion,
has traditional costumes, tapestries, farm and household implements and a variety
of local handicrafts on display.
The Municipal Art Gallery exhibits a selection of work by various contemporary
Cypriot artists; while the Municipal Gardens, with a small zoo, offer the perfect
environment for a leisurely stroll amid lush trees and plants.
Besides the cultural and historical points of interest, simply strolling through
the old town is a unique experience, and it is an excellent place to pick up
souvenirs. Alternatively, you can walk along the sandy beaches or the seafront
promenade to enjoy the scenery.
