Hotels in Paphos
What to see by foot: Paphos
Paphos is a charming harbour town which is rich in archaeological sites and connected
to the goddess of love, Aphrodite, who supposedly rose from the sea at a nearby
location. With its attractive coastline, abundance of historical sites and lively
atmosphere, Paphos is an excellent holiday destination.
About 300m from the harbour, at the end of Kyriakou Nikolaou Street, is a series
of Roman mansions that are still to be fully excavated. Those that have been
unearthed have revealed exquisite mosaic floors made of tiny cubes of marble,
stone and glass paste, and depicting mythological scenes. The mosaics, in some
cases, extend over phenomenal surface areas, as in the House of Dionysus, where
they occupy 556 square metres of space in 14 rooms.
The 'Tombs of the Kings' are in fact not tombs of kings at all, but the burial
place of about 100 Ptolemaic noblemen who lived and died in Paphos between 3
BC and 3 AD. The tombs are carved from solid rock and embellished with Doric
pillars and frescoes.
The District Archaeological Museum features a collection of Cypriot artefacts
from the Neolithic period to 1700, while the Byzantine Museum has icons from
the 12th to 18th centuries. Additionally, visitors can view a private collection
of antiquities from the Neolithic period to the present at the Ethnographical
Museum.
The Ayia Solomoni Church was once a Christian catacomb. It is fronted by a
sacred tree which reputedly cures the diseases of those who hang an offering
on its branches.
Two historically important castles exist in the town. One is Saranta Kolones,
which stands near the harbour and was built in the 12th century; the other is
Paphos Castle, which was originally built as a Byzantine fort to defend the
harbour, but has been destroyed and restored many times.
