What to see by car: Paphos
 
There are a plethora of ancient sites, attractive towns and superb coastline,
all within driving proximity of Paphos. On the western coast of Cyprus is the
Akamas Peninsula, renowned for its unspoilt natural environment and home to the
Baths of Aphrodite.
As well as offering excellent beaches, the towns of Limassol and Larnaca have
a wealth of historical significance to offer the interested visitor. Limassol
is famous for its effervescent celebrations before Lent, when the streets run
wild with music, dancing and parades; as well as the Wine Festival in September,
when free food and wine are distributed.
Limassol stands between the two ancient Greco-Roman settlements of Amathus
and Kourion. The latter boasts a restored amphitheatre where you can watch plays
with a view of the ocean in the distance.
Larnaca has an ancient seafront fort which was originally built to stave off
invaders, and later used as a prison in the early years of British rule. On
its outskirts, you can find the Muslim holy site of Hala Sultan Tekkesi, with
its exquisite gardens. It is situated in a unique position on the edge of the
Akrotiri salt pan, where the locals gather salt in summer, and flamingos transform
it into a sea of colour in winter.
The Troodos Mountains are graced with exquisite scenery, diverse vegetation
and shady pine forests, as well as a number of enchanting villages. Visit Lefkara,
famous for its lace-making, or Pitsilia, where the friendly locals make a variety
of delicious products, including cheese, wine and honey.
The resort of Ayia Napa is the place to go if you are looking for some nightlife.
It is also graced with wonderful beaches, a Venetian monastery and the fascinating
Marine Museum. Nearby Protaras is a quieter, more family-orientated resort.
