Mini guide to Prague
    
Crowds flock to the medieval city of Prague to admire its stunning vistas and
incredible collection of beautiful Baroque buildings. Undeniably romantic, the
city has a special charm and lively atmosphere.
Prague Castle is the centrepiece of this magnificent city, and is arguably
the largest and one of the most impressive castles in the world. The country
has been run from here for nearly a thousand years. Highlights in the walled
compound include: the Spanish Hall and Rudolf Gallery, St Vitus Cathedral, the
Old Royal Palace, the Royal Garden and Golden Lane.
The nearby town of Kutna Hora is a UNESCO World Heritage site, famed for its
colourful square and medieval alleyways, most of which were created under the
guidance of Bohemia's King Wenceslas II. Kutna Hora's Cathedral of Santa Barbara
rivals Prague's St Vitus in its splendour.
Prague is situated almost in the centre of Europe. Beeline distances from the
three seas are approximately the same: Baltic Sea - 365 km, North Sea - 495
km, and the Adriatic Sea - 490 km. The city is surrounded by Central Bohemia
and its suburbs: Prague-East and Prague-West, and is spread over an area of
496km2, which is only 0.6 per cent of the Czech Republic.
Prague's Golden Age began under Charles IV in 1346, but after the First and
Second Defenestrations, the city suffered religious conflicts. Prague endured
rule by the Habsburgs from 1526 until 1918, before Nazi and Soviet occupation.
During this time it was merged with it's neghbour to form Czechoslovakia. Finally,
the 'Velvet Revolution' saw the popular Vaclev Havel democratically elected
in 1990 as the President of the soon to be formed new Czech Republic.
The Czech Republic's road network is good and makes driving to Prague relatively
hassle free. Prague is also located at the centre of Europe's rail network and
has frequent connections from Vienna, Budapest and Munich. The city is serviced
regularly flights from across Europe and farther afield.
