Geography of Prague
    
Prague is situated almost in the centre of Europe. Beeline distances from the
three seas are approximately the same: Baltic Sea - 365 km, North Sea - 495 km,
and the Adriatic Sea - 490 km. Prague is surrounded by Central Bohemia and its
suburbs: Prague-East and Prague-West. The city is spread over an area of 496 km2,
which is only 0.6 per cent of the Czech Republic.
Prague is situated in the middle of the Czech Highlands. The current layout
of the town is a result of erosive and accumulative influences of the Vltava
River, along which Prague is located. The highest spot is the flattened landscape
southwest of Zlicin (399m above sea level), and the lowest is the Vltava River
surface on the north edge of the town (177m above sea level). The maximum differences
in altitude reach more than 200m over quite a short distance.
Because Prague is situated in the centre of the continent, the city and surrounding
area are subject to extremes of weather. Summers can be unpleasantly hot, whereas
the winter day temperatures often hover around freezing, with plenty of snow.
Early spring often sees severe flooding, as the snows melt and the river swamps
the old town. The best times to visit the city for pleasant weather are late
spring, early summer and early autumn.
