What to see by foot: Prague

An interesting walk, lasting about 2 hours, 30 minutes, begins with the sights
of Prague's famous castle. A changing of the guard occurs on the hour in the courtyard
at the castle's front entrance.
Moving directly ahead to the second courtyard, you arrive at the Spanish Hall,
which was built in the 16th century. It contains a series of 18th century murals,
and is also attached to the Rudolph Gallery. Also in this courtyard is the Picture
Gallery, which houses European and Bohemian masterpieces.
The third castle courtyard is dominated by the imposing St Vitus Cathedral,
which was begun in 1334 and completed in the 19th century. St Vitus himself
is buried within its walls, as is St Wenceslas, who has his own chapel in the
cathedral complete with 14th century murals. Other highlights in the cathedral
include: the royal crypt, containing remains of Bohemian kings; and the Golden
Gate, which is decorated with a 14th century mosaic of the Last Judgement.
The cathedral is connected to the Royal Palace, which until the late 16th century
was the residence of royalty. Inside this large complex are the banquet hall,
the Green Chamber, and the window where two officials were thrown to their deaths
- an event which started the Thirty Years War. The palace also houses the Chamber
of the Imperial Court.
From the Imperial Palace, make your way to St George's Square, which is dominated
by St George's Basilica. The basilica was founded in 973 AD and now houses the
National Gallery's art collection. From the basilica, you can walk up Jirska
Street to Lobkowicz Palace, home to the National Museum's history collection.
From here, it is easy to walk up some steps to Golden Lane. This picturesque
16th century street contains small shops, galleries and cafés; and also
features a house which Franz Kafka called home in 1917. Exit the lane and descend
the steps to leave the castle and conclude your walk.
