What to see by foot: Copenhagen
Denmark's capital city has commanded an important position in the Baltic for
centuries, located as it is on the Øresund at the entrance to the Baltic
sea. Today it attracts tourists to witness its charm and unique cultural identity,
which blends an historical legacy with some of Europe's most cutting edge design.
Despite being Scandinavia's biggest city, Copenhagen has a laid back charm and
is visitor friendly.
Strøget is perhaps the most famous street in Copenhagen and harks back
to a time when Hans Christian Andersen wandered the back lanes of the city's
pedestrianised center. Known as the longest pedestrianised shopping street in
the world, it winds and meanders through the old town and Latin Quarter and
is lined with medieval buildings, most notably the Rundetårn - a 17th
C observatory tower open to the public.
Strøget leads onto the sweeping Rådhuspladsen (main square), connecting
the old pedestrianised town to the newer, neon clad grid. Another famous Copenhagen
attraction found here is Tivoli Gardens, the world's oldest amusement park.
It is as popular and lively today as it was when it first opened more than a
century ago and fireworks burst the night skies open with a free kaleidoscope
of colour every Wednesday and Saturday in the summer.
At the other end of Strøget is the Kultorvet plaza where you'll find
the exemplary 12th C Vor Frue Kirke - one of Copenhagen's grandest. Adjacent
is another of the grand open spaces that characterize this city - Kongens Nytorv.
This large and handsome square is fronted by grand baroque buildings and leads
to the photo-friendly Nyhavn canal area. Reminiscent of Amsterdam, this canal,
and its sidestreet, features prominently in postcards. Its 17th century buildings
have been colourfully decked out and offer a backdrop to the handful of beautifully
preserved sail merchant ships that once off-loaded their wares here. Today it
is tourists and Swedish day-trippers who flock to the trendy restaurants and
bars found here.
From Nyhaven you can wander in either direction to discover the modest Amalienborg
Palace - home of the royal family for more than 200 years - or the grander Slotsholmen.
The latter is located on a man-made island and houses the Christianborg Palace
and Royal Reception chambers. The grand architecture reflects Copenhagen at
its wealthiest, and this site is certainly on the tour routes, featuring other
attractions such as the Ruins of Absalon's Fortress and the Folketinget - the
present day parliamentary chambers.
The Danes also pride themselves on their reputation for interior design innovation,
and their flair for contemporary work ahead of its time can be viewed at two
famous museums; Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek and Nationalmuseet. In addition to unique
Danish heritage, they also contain fine classical collections from far off lands.
