What to see by car: Copenhagen
Although a car isn't entirely practical in Copenhagen there a few worthwhile
attractions that are quite a long walk from the center. Rosenborg Slot, north
of Strøget, is a Dutch Renaissance-styled former Royal residence on the
edge of Kongens Have (King's Gardens), today it is full of priceless jewels
and royal booty. Having found your way here it isn't difficult to seek out the
infamous 'Little Mermaid', located on the waterfront facing the Øresund.
By wandering through the preserved fortifications nearby you won't feel the
trip was wasted when you discover how small and disappointing this famous sculptured
landmark really is.
To complete the Viking trail by car, travel to Roskilde, where visitors can
explore the Viking Ship Museum, containing five vessels found in a fjord nearby.
The largest of the vessels was built in Ireland around 1060 and was capable
of carrying up to 100 warriors. At Jelling, there are two enormous burials mounds,
one of which was originally the burial ground of King Gorm. These mounds are
the largest in Denmark.
Denmark's most famous resident was Hans Christian Andersen and, to many visitors,
he is the symbol of Denmark. To follow the footsteps of Andersen, go to the
island of Funen in Odense. Andersen was born there in 1805 and it is possible
to visit his childhood home, which is now a museum. There is also the H.C. Andersens
Hus, which houses many of Andersen's memorabilia. It is also fun to simply wander
the cobblestone streets and soak in the atmosphere.
No visit to Denmark would be complete without visiting some of its magnificent
castles. Northwest of Copenhagen lies one of Denmark's finest castles, the Hillerod-Frederiksborg
Slot. This is a romantic renaissance-style castle, beautifully located on a
lake. The other castle near Copenhagen is Egeskov Castle, on Funan Island. This
is also a renaissance-style castle nestled beside a lake in a 15-hectare park.
The park alone is worth a visit to marvel at the English gardens, a 200-year-old
maze and wildlife.
The closest beach to Copenhagen is the Bellevue; however, the water is not
recommended for swimming. The best sandy beaches are easily accessible from
Copenhagen in North Zealand and include: Gilleleje, Hornbæk, Liseleje
and Tisvildeleje.
Finally, one of Copenhagen's more curious attractions is Christinia, within
easy reach of the city centre. This former army barracks and adjacent land was
taken over by hippie squatters in the 1960s and has, today, become very much
a part of Copenhagen's counter-culture. This community of liberal people, with
their 'dope shops' and makeshift residences provide a fascinating attraction
to an ever increasing number of tourists.
