Travelling to Cairo

Egypt sits at the nexus of Africa, Europe and the Middle East. The main methods
of transport into the country are by air and by sea (via the Mediterranean). Though
all land borders are open, private vehicles are not permitted to enter Egypt from
Israel. There is a twice-weekly steamer that ferries cars the length of Lake Nasser,
from Wadi Halfa in the Sudan to Aswan in Egypt.
Buses run regularly from Tel Aviv and Jerusalem to the border at Rafah. The
border passengers disembark from the Israeli vehicle, go through customs, and
take an Egyptian bus or taxi to their final destination.
A train line running north to south dissects the country, passing through Cairo
at the busy Ramses station. First class overnight trains to Luxor and Aswan
can be comfortable and cheap, and usually run on time; however, the platform
can be chaotic.
Cairo International Airport is the largest and most active in Egypt, and in
recent years has expanded, but remains an uncomfortable place to kill a few
hours, offering very limited facilities for eating or shopping. Access to the
departure lounges is only allowed up-to two hours before departure, so don't
arrive at the terminal too early ir you;ll feel like you're sitting at a bus
stop! All airports in Egypt have a taxi service to city centres, operated on
a flat fee basis. In Cairo, transport options include limousine, taxi and bus.
The airport bus service operates from Terminal 1. The bus leaves when full
and stops at: Midan Tahrir in downtown Cairo, in Mohandeseen and along Pyramids
Road in Giza. There are also regular city buses, but they are not recommended
for they are often too crowded for foreigners.
Distances are large in Egypt and many choose to fly, as it is the only really
convenient and comfortable option. Egypt Air and Air Sinai offer good domestic
connections. Charter flights also fly to Luxor, Hurghada and Sharm el Sheik.
Cairo is also accessible via the Nile River on ferries and cruise ships and
cruising on the Nile is comfortable and popular with tourists.
