Geography of Cairo

Egypt is located in northern Africa, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, between
Libya and the Gaza Strip. In area it is slightly more than three times the size
of New Mexico in the USA.
At the eastern edge of the Sahara desert, Egypt is a vast desert plateau interrupted
by the Nile valley and delta. Cairo sits in this fertile delta in the country's
north and, because of its strategic location, it has long been an important
trading centre, from the time of the ancient desert caravans to the Suez Canal
today.
Cairo is conveniently located for the traveller in search of ancient and modern
attractions. The port city of Alexandria and the Mediterranean Sea are a short
distance north; while Giza, the site of Egypt's premier attractions - the Sphinx
and the Pyramids - is on the outskirts of Cairo itself. The Nile is a natural
choice for travelling south from Cairo to the Aswan Dam and the ancient attractions
of Luxor, and is certainly the most comfortable alternative.
This geographic location means that Egypt controls the Sinai Peninsula, the
only land bridge between Africa and remainder of the eastern hemisphere; and
the Suez Canal, the shortest sea link between the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean
Sea. Its size and its juxtaposition to Israel ensures it a major role in Middle
Eastern geopolitics.
