Hotels in Hurghada
What to see by foot: Hurghada
Hurghada was founded in the early 20th century as a small fishing village. Today,
it is one of the foremost tourist resorts of the Red Sea coast and an international
centre for aquatic sports. The city boasts every activity in and on the water,
some of which include: windsurfing, sailing, deep-sea fishing, swimming, snorkelling
and scuba diving.
Scuba divers are attracted to Hurghada for the unique underwater gardens offshore,
which are some of the finest in the world. The warm waters here are ideal for
many varieties of rare fish and coral reefs. If you're not a diver, you can
still snorkel or view the underwater sights through glass bottom boats.
Hurghada has featured on international diving itineraries since the 1950s,
and is today more popular than ever due to the accelerated pace of recent development.
The town boasts all the facilities of a modern city without losing its timeless
desert ambience. Commercial diving is also well established in Hurghada. Some
operators use this as a point of departure for sites lying farther afield such
as Abu Nuhas and Bluff Point. But it is the local dive sites which really guarantee
Hurghada's popularity.
For those not diving, Hurghada is also a beach resort where thousands of older
Europeans and others come with their families to enjoy the sun on private resort
beaches, some all-inclusive. Many of these hotels offer so many activities and
facilities that you may never need to leave the resort. Often, the larger resorts
have zoos, playgrounds, discos, bars, a number of pools and even small theatres.
Additionally, while in Hurghada, don't miss the museum and aquarium, with their
complete collections of creatures from the Red Sea.
Hurghada is a city under development and is expanding to accommodate its bright
future. This section of the Red Sea is already very busy in general. Safaga
is just south of Hurghada, and farther afield is Soma Bay. To the north is El
Gouna, a highly organized resort community.
The area has an excellent selection of accommodation, and many restaurants
line the main road. Today, Hurghada is also known as a party town, particularly
among Europeans. The many nightclubs in the town are frequented by visitors
and locals of all ages. The busiest clubs are easy to find along the main street,
as are many inexpensive and expensive hotels.
