What to see by car: Hurghada
Islands near Hurghada offer all kinds of fun and excitement. Take a daytrip to
Giftun Island for snorkelling and sunbathing. When you're out of the water, you
can shop in the boutiques, relax in the luxury holiday villages or visit the Roman
Mons Porphyrites (Mountain of Porphyry) remains at nearby Gebel Abu Dukhan (Father
of Smoke). Daytrips or safaris to explore the Red Sea Mountains by camel or jeep
are also available here.
Other nearby islands and destinations include: Shadwan Island, Shaab Abu Shiban,
Shaab el-Erg and Umm Gammar Island. Additionally, try to visit: Shasb Saghir
Umm Gammae, Careless Reef, Abu Ramada Island, Shaab Abu Ramada, Dishet el-Dhaba,
Shaab Abu Hashish, Sharm el-Arab and Abu Minqar Island.
It's also possible to take an overnight trip to the Valley of the Kings. The
Valley of the Kings and the incredible temple complexes in Luxor in Upper Egypt
contains many of the tombs of pharaohs from the New Kingdom, including Tutankhamen
and Ramses the Great.
For those travelling with children, the Marine Museum, containing a marine
biology station and a small aquarium, is located a few miles north of Hurghada
and open from 08:00 until 20:00.
Farther afield, another divers' paradise is Sharm el Sheik, which is situated
on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula. The resort town is famous for its
transparent and mild water and the abundance of colours on the reefs. Below
the surface, there are many different kinds of coral and an incredible variety
of sea species. This is a popular place for novice and seasoned scuba divers
thanks to the many diving sites which can be reached in few minutes. You'll
have to take a ferry to reach the Sinai Peninsula from Hurghada.
