Travelling to Sharm El Sheikh
Driving in Egypt is not recommended as there are few rules that are either adhered
to or enforced. The roads are mostly of very poor quality, with numerous bumps
and potholes. Egyptian drivers overtake dangerously all the time and visitors
should beware of cars coming towards them in their own lane. Night driving is
particularly dangerous as headlights are often not used.
It is easiest to reach Sharm el Sheik by air. Flights are available to Sharm
el Sheik from many cities in Europe and the Middle East. There are also daily
flights from Cairo. Cairo International Airport is in the suburb of Heliopolis,
about 24kms from the city centre. Terminal 1 is mainly used by the national
carrier, EgyptAir, for both domestic and international flights; while Terminal
2 is used by other international airlines.
From London, there are regular direct scheduled flights to Cairo, Alexandria
and Luxor, and highly competitive charters to Luxor, Hurghada and Sharm el Sheik.
If you're pushed for time or want to make things easier, buying a package holiday
can also be sensible. Scuba diving packages to Sharm el Sheik are plentiful.
You can also catch a ferry from Hurghada to Sharm el Sheik.
