Hotels in Sharm El Sheikh
What to see by foot: Sharm El Sheikh
Sharm el Sheik (Sheik's Bay) is one of Egypt's premier tourist and resort areas,
and is the number one place for scuba divers wishing to plunge into the Red Sea.
With magnificent scuba diving, hotels, resorts, beaches, desert trekking and restaurants,
this area is the perfect place for a relaxing or active holiday.
Sharm el Sheik is famous for its transparent and mild water and the abundance
of colours on the reefs. Below the surface, there are many different kinds of
coral and an incredible variety of sea species.
This is a popular place for novice and seasoned scuba divers thanks to the
many diving sites reachable in few minutes with comfortable and convenient boats
which also offer meals on board. The temperature of the water is good all year
round and this makes diving and snorkelling possible at any time.
The Red Sea contains more than 1,000 species of fish and has over 2,000kms
of fringing reef, making it one of the most bio-diverse seas in the world. Extreme
heat in this region causes a very rapid rate of evaporation which results in
a high concentration of salt. This makes the Red Sea among the saltiest bodies
of water on Earth.
In the depths, it is very easy to find a number of wrecks. One of the most
interesting is the Thistlegorm, where it is easy to come face to face with barracudas
and sharks.
The Ras Muhammad Natural Park, at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula,
20kms from Sharm el Sheik, was established in 1983 to protect the coral reefs
and the area's fragile environment. The colours and life in this amazing coral
reef will stun both scuba divers and casual snorkellers.
Although it is known as a scuba divers' resort, there is plenty to do in Sharm
el Sheik both in and out of the water. The terrific interior of the Sinai desert
offers exciting activities. You can rent quad bikes and motorbikes, or take
a guided excursion into the desert. Another exciting adventure is a ride out
into the desert on camel or horseback, or even by jeep.
For interesting holiday photos, visit the limestone boulder two kilometres
north of the edge of downtown that is shaped through erosion into a vague portrait
of John F Kennedy.
