Hotels Sharm El Sheikh
What to see by car: Sharm El Sheikh
The outlying areas of the resort are worthy of exploration. For an adventure of
epic proportions, take a trip through the desert to Mt Sinai. You can climb to
the top of the mountain in about three hours and see the place where Christians,
Jews and Muslims believe God gave Moses the original tablets containing the Ten
Commandments.
Also popular is the Bohemian town of Dahab, which lies between Qura Bay to
the south and the smaller Ghazala Bay to the north. This delightful, former
Bedouin fishing village attracts laid-back travellers and has a wonderful atmosphere
and setting, as well as good scuba diving.
The peninsula of Ras Mohammed is located at the southern end of Sinai, about
20kms from Sharm el Sheik. The park is home to many beautiful dive sites, including
the very famous Shark Reef and Yolanda Reef.
In the Wadi Feiran, the Monastery of St Catherine has been called the oldest
working Christian monastery (though St Anthony's predates it) and the smallest
diocese in the world. St Catherine's body was reportedly carried away by angels,
but her relics are stored in a marble reliquary in the Basilica.
About 10kms from the monastery is the remarkable Blue Desert (or Blue Valley).
The Blue Desert owes its name to the numerous rocks scattered across an area
of nearly 15 sq kms. These were painted blue in 1980 by the Belgian artist Jean
Vera me to commemorate the end of the conflict between Egypt and Israel.
El-Arish, situated on the Mediterranean coast of the Sinai Peninsula, is now
considered the most important centre for Bedouin handicrafts in Sinai. Its Sinai
Heritage Museum is the sole museum in the peninsula that is dedicated to Bedouins
and their culture.
The small town of Nuweiba is where the regular service of liners and hydrofoils
to Aqaba in Jordan depart and the trip to visit Petra, the legendary capital
of the Nabatean Kingdom is apopular and rewarding one.
About 12kms north of Nuweiba is the Colored Canyon with its very narrow walls
which, at some points, are 40m high and a little more than a metre wide. They
are made of sandstone that possesses an incredible range of hues: dark brown,
red and straw yellow.
