Mini guide to Tallinn
Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia - a country which only recently gained its
independence in 1991. Situated only 60kms from Helsinki, the city has become a
popular destination for tourists and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage
site. Tallinn has had a long and arduous history and is, without doubt, one of
Europe's least known historic wonders.
As the city has been subjugated many times, its sites reflect a multicultural
past. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a fabulous Russian Orthodox church and
home to some noteworthy mosaics. Alternatively, the Estonian Open Air Museum,
located in the Bayside Park, shows fine examples of Estonian architecture and
sometimes has displays of Estonian traditional dance.
On a walking tour of the old town, you shouldn't miss Toompea Castle, the Holy
Ghost Church and the splendid Gothic Town Hall. The town is a labyrinth of cobbled
streets and shaded alleyways; as you sit within its ancient city walls, you
may notice the city's old and new style architecture.
Tallinn is famed for its production of traditional handicrafts, which brings
in scores of tourists for the shopping alone. A myriad of shops can be found
selling everything from hand-knit woollen sweaters, ceramics and leather goods,
to amber jewellery and artwork.
You've probably never heard of Estonian cuisine, Nnevertheless, the locally
caught crayfish served at Restaurant Lagunn, in the old town, is delicious.
The city also has a varied selection of international cuisine.
Easily accessible either by plane or by helicopter, Tallinn's airport is located
just four kilometres from the city centre and offers everything an airport should.
Buses from the airport to the city centre run from 07:00 until midnight.
It's actually possible to arrive in Tallinn by helicopter as well. There are
14 helicopter flights between Tallinn and Helsinki from Monday to Saturday.
On Sundays and on national holidays, there are no regular flights. Copterline
Tallinn Heliport is situated only five minutes from the centre of town; the
trip from Helsinki takes 18 minutes.
