Travelling to Helsinki
It is easy to get to Helsinki from anywhere in the world. If you happen to be
arriving from Lapland, St Petersburg or Moscow, you will probably find the train
convenient. Rail is also an option if you plan to travel around the country, as
there is a comprehensive rail network connecting Helsinki with all major Finnish
towns. In fact, the Central Railway Station is one of the most impressive buildings
in Helsinki, and a sight worth seeing in itself.
An alternative way of travelling around Finland is by bus. The Central Bus
Station is located on Simonkatu, and there are hourly services between the country's
main cities and towns. The station is currently being modernised, and work is
scheduled to be completed in 2006.
Most people arrive by plane at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, where about 120 international
flights arrive every day. The airport is located 19 kilometres from the centre
of the city, and the journey into town takes around half an hour. To get into
town, just hop in a taxi, or look for the Finnair airport bus or bus number
615, which runs regularly to the railway station in town.
Finally, for travellers arriving from Estonia, Sweden and Germany, an appealing
option is to take the daily ferry service and enjoy the approach to Helsinki
across the sea.
Getting around Helsinki itself is very easy with a public transport system
that was rated second best in Europe in 2003. With a single ticket you can ride
local buses, the metro and even the ferry across to Suomenlinna. During the
summer, you can also use one of the city bikes that are parked in convenient
locations, for a deposit of €2.
