What to see by car: Aix en Provence
The Provencal region has plenty for the adventurous explorer to discover in terms
of culture, history, architecture, landscape and lifestyle.
The town of Avignon is permeated by fine examples of age-old architecture.
The Petit Palais, the 13th century former living quarters of the archbishop,
is now an art museum containing paintings and sculptures from the Roman and
Gothic eras as well as pieces by masters of the Italian schools.
The nearby Musée Calvet holds beautiful paintings and antique silverware
within the walls of an 18th century mansion. The Musée Lapidaire contains
statues, mosaics and carvings from pre-Roman Provence.
Avignon is also home to numerous exquisite 16th to 18th century houses, and
six impressive churches dating from the 14th to 17th centuries. The Pope's Palace
is the biggest Gothic palace in the world, with 25 rooms adorned with magnificent
frescoes.
The nearby port of Marseille is a heady blend of exotic, cosmopolitan characters
and dubious dealings - a perfect place for those who enjoy a walk on the wild
side! If you visit the city, be sure to sample the bouillabaisse, which gourmets
agree is excellent.
If you're saturated with culture and history, a trip to the Provencal coast
is an excellent alternative. Saint-Tropez, with its pristine beaches, warm golden
sun, lush gardens and wonderful climate, is an unforgettable holiday destination.
Nice is another idyllic beachside town. It features green pines, 300 hectares
of gardens, the sparkling Mediterranean and colourful frescoes decorating the
façades of the houses. Visit the humming Cours Saleya, where a daily
flower, fruit and vegetable market is held; and Saint-Francois Square, where
delicious fresh fish is on offer.
