Mini guide to Biarritz

Located in the Basque region on the south of France's Atlantic coast is Biarritz.
This thriving port town was once a retreat for France's highest nobles. Although
these days it may not attract such gentry, it does attract hordes of tourists
to its fine beaches and lively promenades. Biarritz is also a popular destination
for surfers, with its reliable weather and abundance of delectable bars and
restaurants.
The quai de la Grande Plage, Biarritz's principal promenade, runs along the
northwest facing shore. This bustling stretch of road offers a wide selection
of restaurants and souvenir shops, emporiums and cafés where one can
sit to watch the sunset. The Hotel du Calais, Biarritz's most important building,
was originally constructed as a palace for the Empress but has now been renovated
and transformed in to an upmarket hotel.
Exploring Biarritz by car is a must, the Aquitaine and Pays Basque region, located
in the southwest of France, is culturally intriguing and has some interesting
places to visit.
Nearby, St Jean de Luz is a pristine seaside resort close to the Spanish border,
with a convivial atmosphere. Another town worth visiting is Hendaye, a frontier
town with Spain confined on the edge of both the Atlantic Ocean and Pyrenees
Mountains. It has some good beaches and an interesting medieval centre.
Biarritz is located 779 kms southwest of Paris, 193 kms southwest of Bordeaux
and lies in the border region with Spain. It was once a fishing village adored
by Empress Eugénie, and the village soon attracted her husband, Napoleon
III, who then put the town on the map. It was also frequented by Queen Victoria
and her son, Edward VII. What followed was the birth of the most popular coastal
attraction in all of France.
Biarritz is easily accessible, with its own airport and a stop off for the
great TGV (France's high speed train). If you're driving from Paris, take the
A10 south to Vierzon, change to the N20 south to Limoges, continue on the N21
south to Tarbes, and finally turn west along the N117 to Biarritz.
