What to see by car: Biarritz

Exploring Biarritz by car is a must. Winding roads are encompassed by beautifully
picturesque countryside, coupled with quiet villages and towns reminiscent of
both France and Spanish culture. St Jean de Luz is a charming seaside resort
and active fishing port not far from the Spanish border. The town centre has
a medieval background, with Iberian and Moorish influences.
Alternatively head to Bayonne, at the junction of the rivers Adour and Nive.
A busy commercial town with historical value, it features Roman fortifications,
the imposing 14th century Cathedral Sainte-Marie and the excellent Bonnat Museum.
Hendaye is a frontier town with Spain and is situated between the Atlantic
Ocean and Pyrenees Mountains. With plenty of great beaches and an interesting
medieval centre, it makes a worthwhile daytrip.
The pleasant town of Anglet, with two coastal quarters Chiberta and Chambre
d'Amour, both with long expanses of sandy surfing beaches, is part of the Cote
Basque. Anglet is popular with the rich and famous, and the prices are a tangible
reflection of this; however, it does seem to attract a healthy amount of tourists
as well.
On the Gave de Pau River, is the town of Pau. This year-round resort is a good
place to pause in your trek through the Pyrénées. Discovered by
the British in the 19th century, it has some astonishing panoramic views of
the mountains. The English used to make up at least 15 per cent of the population,
and aspects of English culture still linger in the town.
