Mini guide to Bordeaux

The city of Bordeaux attracts an abundance of local and foreign visitors on
the strength of its charming town, filled with parks and many shaded streets.
Its Atlantic coast location, excellent local wines and lively atmosphere make
it one of France's most memorable places. It's worth staying in Bordeaux for
some time to really appreciate its splendour.
Bordeaux' town centre is pedestrian friendly and has a quiet atmosphere to
it, featuring a cluster of medieval buildings, most notably the Cathedral St-Andr,
dating from the 12th century. It's worth seeing some of its many museums, most
notable are: Musee d'Aquitaine which takes Bordeaux' history back 25,000 years;
and Musee des Beaux-Arts, over 200 years old and home to Flemish, Dutch and
Italian works from the 17th century.
Situated at the head of the Garonne estuary, Bordeaux is a great starting point
to see some of the pleasant seaside towns that are scattered around the city.
The Dordogne region is world famous for its wine; and a few days driving around
the many vineyards in the area is a must.
Bordeaux is situated 224kms southwest of Paris and 213kms west of Lyon, on
the Garonne River. The port of Bordeaux, the capital of Aquitaine, is one of
the world's most important wine-producing areas. The region attracts hordes
of wine enthusiasts who are more than welcome to enter in to the world of wine-making
by visiting the area's offices of wine.
At one point in the history of Bordeaux, the city belonged to the British for
a time spanning 300 years. The influence of the British has been pervasive,
and Bordeaux is sometime referred to as 'the most un-French of French cities'.
Bordeaux is France's fifth-largest city and has an airport to accommodate its
busy nature. The local airport Bordeaux-Mérignac is served by flights
from as far away as London and New York. The railway station Gare St-Jean, on
the west bank of the river, has at least 12 trains arriving from Paris daily.
Bordeaux is easily accessible by car from any major city in France.
