Geography of Bordeaux

Bordeaux is situated on the Atlantic coast, 224kms southwest of Paris on the
Garonne River. Its fortunate location makes it an ideal point to stop off and
explore the surrounding countryside, which is littered with a profusion of idyllic
vineyards.
From the town of La Rochelle to the Bordeaux Wine District, the southwest of
France is often overlooked by visitors driving from Paris to Spain. However,
this area is noted for its Atlantic beaches; medieval and Renaissance ruins;
Romanesque and Gothic churches; vineyards; and plentiful restaurants and inns
which serve top quality French cuisine. You could literally spend most of your
onward journey lost in the many affable and scenic towns that are scattered
around this part of the region.
If you have the time, it is recommended you head inland and try the cognac
in the pleasant town of Cognac. From there you can head to nearby art cities
like Poitiers and Angoulême. If you can manage it, allow a week here -
enough time to see all the sights, eat as much as you can and sample all the
excellent local wines.
It's possible to get a guided tour around the many vineyards; wine exporters
welcome guests who come to sample wines and learn about the industry. Maps and
guides are available free from the Maison du Vin (House of Wine) opposite the
tourist office. It's most convenient to travel by car, but it's possible to
use alternative forms of transport, such as: bus, bicycle, or even walking.
