What to see by foot: Bordeaux

You can organize a guided walking tour of the city through the tourist office
or traipse around at your own leisure. Either way, Bordeaux is a fun city to
see on foot.
Start your tour in the old town at Place de la Comédie, in the very
heart of Bordeaux. It's a busy traffic hub that was once the site of a Roman
temple. One of the great theatres of France, the Grand Théâtre,
was built between 1773 and 1780 as testimony to the prosperity of Bordeaux;
a colonnade of 12 columns lines its façade. Statues of goddesses and
the muses are surmounted on these columns and the overall effect is tremendous.
It's possible to enter the lavishly decorated interior by asking one of the
porters.
Next, head north to Esplanade des Quinconces; built between 1818 and 1828,
it covers nearly 30 acres. A smaller, but more charming square is Place de la
Bourse, bounded by quays opening on to the Garonne. It was laid out between
1728 and 1755; and, at its centre is the Fountain of the Three Graces. Adjacent
are the Custom House and the Stock Exchange.
There are a cluster of medieval buildings, including the Cathedral St-Andr,
dating from the 12th century. The cathedral's interior is far more resplendent
than the exterior and the 15th century belfry, Tour Pey-Berland, is open to
the public.
The Jardin Public was established in 1755 and later reorganised in an English
style a century later. It is home to the meticulously catalogued Jardin Botanique
- founded in 1629.
