What to see by car: Bordeaux

Apart from visiting the old city of Bordeaux, many people arrive here to explore
the lush surrounding countryside that is filled with acres upon acres of vineyards.
With several lovely seaside towns north and south of the Garonne River mouth
and a hinterland rich in scenery, travelling by car is a must.
The Medoc is Bordeaux' wine growing region, famous for its cabernet sauvignons,
and the area's undulating hills are covered in vines. To the north of the village
of Pauillac are two notable chateaux open to the public: Chateau Lafitte Rothschild
and Chateau Mouton Rothschild. In addition Chateau Margaux and Chateau Palmer
produce some of the world's most celebrated red wines.
If you're coming for sand and sea, head to Cap Ferret and Soulac-sur-Mer. Both
resorts offer top quality amenities.
The surrounding countryside of the medieval town of St-Milion is picturesque
and unspoilt. There are almost 100 chateaux to visit but the town brings the
tasting to you, and its quaint streets and squares are lined with wine shops.
Tours (in which you don't have to drive) can be arranged from the centrally
located tourist office. St-Milion's 13th century ramparts are also worth exploring
and afford terrific panoramas of the Dordogne River valley.
It's also worth seeing the Eglise Monolithe, Romanesque Collgiale (church)
and the 13th century donjon Castel daou Rey (King's Tower).
For those who are looking for the beach, you can kick sand with the many locals
at Arcachon, a popular retreat throughout the year. The Ville D'ete (Summer
Quarter) is lively, while the Ville d'Hiver (Winter Quarter) is worth strolling
around to find a little peace and quiet.
Just out of the town is the remarkable vast (and growing) Dune de Pyla lump
of sand. Alternatively, you might want to visit the oyster farms at Gujan Mestras.
