Geography of Cannes
    
Cannes is situated 351 kms south of Paris; 164 kms east of Marseille; and 26
kms southwest of Nice. It's a coastal town and offers everything you'd expect,
from pristine beaches to winding roads that take you between a spattering of
resorts. Although at times driving can be somewhat of a pain, due to heavy traffic,
it's recommended if you want to see the excellent surrounding countryside.
Explore the flat landscapes between Cannes and satellite resorts like La Napoule,
which are well suited for pleasant daytrips. For a fresh-air tour, you can easily
rent scooters, bicycles and mopeds at local shops; rentals are inexpensive and
a great way to see the many sights.
Whether you are a seasoned voyeur or a volleyball fanatic, the beaches of Cannes
won't be a disappointment. Plage de la Croisette runs between the Vieux Port
and the Port Canto. The beaches along this lucrative stretch of sand are 'payante',
which means that you will have to pay between 15€ and 44€. Each beach
is sectioned off by wooden barricades that make it possible for you to go beach
hopping. Some of the hotels that line the beaches offer discounts for their
guests.
Looking for a free public beach where you won't have to pay for rental chaises
or parasols? Head for Plage du Midi, also known as Midi Plage, just west of
the Vieux Port; or Plage Gazagnaire, east of the Port Canto. These beaches seem
to attract more families; and, although you probably won't catch a glimpse of
Hollywood stars here, they are free and still maintain a good standard.
