What to see by foot: Cannes

Cannes, without doubt, is best known for its film festival which attracts a plethora of rich and famous super stars. Nevertheless, it is a charming town, where you'll find plenty of interesting sights along with eye-catching scenery.

Le Suquet is the old town, perched on a hill, from where you can enjoy panoramic vistas. Here lie the ancient remains of the fortified 12th century priory Chapelle Ste-Anne, as well as the Musee de la Castre.

If you have a penchant for following the wealthy and beautiful, then head to Cannes' main streets - Rue d'Antibes, Rue Meynardier and the Promenade de la Croisette. Make sure to be prudent with your plastic, as these streets are particularly expensive.

La Croisette, the palm-tree-lined waterfront avenue, gives Cannes its exotic, high class appeal; and you can't miss the garish façade of the film festival auditorium. It's also fun to stroll around the marina and look in awe at the spectacle of multi-million dollar yachts.

Finding a non-paying beach in this area is a little frustrating, as many belong to the expensive seafront hotels; but there are a few west of Le Suquet, along the plages du Midi and just east of the Palais des Festivals. A popular down-to-earth escape is the Arles de Lrins. A short boat ride offshore, it boasts good walking and cycling trails, a few curious fortifications and several small, quieter beaches.

You'd expect to find superlative cuisine in Cannes, and you can, at superlative prices, especially along the waterfront. It's best to have a cursory read of the menu and its prices before you indulge.
