What to see by car: Cannes

As Cannes definitely does not suit all budgets, many people prefer to make Cannes a daytrip from other more affordable locations on the Cote d'Azur, such as Antibes and Nice (less than an hour away). The Provence region and the glorious southern coastline make it worthwhile taking a car and exploring the sights.

Antibes, a holiday resort popular with locals and tourists alike, is not far from Cannes. It has a pleasant and pedestrian friendly town centre, and boasts some of the best sandy beaches in the region. It also has a large marina which is home to some expensive yachts during the summer.

The city of Nice, situated in the Baie des Anges, is the commercial and tourist hub. The streets are perpetually busy, and the old town is a delightful labyrinth of winding streets and squares home to Genoese, Provencal, medieval and Baroque architecture. Don't miss the exotic Cathedrale Sainte Reparate; Palais Lascaris; Opera House; grand Hotel Negresco; and Promenade des Anglais. Nice also has some fantastic museums and galleries boasting some of Europe's best collections of impressionist artists.

Further along is Monaco, one of the world's few remaining absolute monarchies. It has a reputation for attracting the world's rich and famous: the definitive playground for the loaded. Its Casino Royale, Castle Rock, the aquarium and super-yacht marinas are all highlights.

Heading west, you'll come across the idyllic up-market town of Saint Tropez, a pleasant place to visit for a few hours but ruinously expensive to stay in.

Inland, the whole of the region of Provence provides a delightful excursion. It's a rural hinterland characterized by vineyards, sleepy villages and the historic towns of Avignon and Arles - which include some interesting Roman excavations.
