Travelling to Carcassonne
 
France has an excellent road network; and Carcassonne can be easily reached via
motorway A61 from northern France. Visitors travelling from the UK should expect
the journey to take approximately 12 hours.
The French rail network is also superb; the Channel Tunnel has significantly
cut travel time from the UK and led to better deals on regular train lines.
The 350-km journey now takes only 3 hours. Those arriving in Paris have the
option of several night trains running to Carcassonne.
A number of French ports, including Calais and the Eurotunnel have a regular
train service to Carcassonne. The town is a major stopping point for trains
between Toulouse to destinations south and east; 24 trains destined for Carcassonne
and beyond leave Toulouse each day. The trip takes approximately 50 minutes.
Bus routes connect Carcassonne to many other French locations, and to major
European cities outside of France.
Undoubtedly, the most time and energy efficient method of reaching Carcassonne
from London and other international cities is by air. Toulouse is now only a
2-hour flight from London, and there is at least one direct flight from Heathrow
to Toulouse per day. Carcassonne is served by both Carcassonne Airport and Toulouse
International Airport. Most international flights destined for the area land
at Toulouse, although there are a number of international flights which touch
down at Carcassonne itself.
Many foreign visitors arrive in Paris and find their way to Carcassonne using
the efficient rail system. From Carcassonne Airport, The town itself is only
4kms away from Carcassonne Airport and can be reached by taxi or a regular bus
service which runs between the two points. Toulouse Airport is a 45-minute drive
from Carcassonne town.
There are numerous ferries that cross the Channel from various British ports.
From London, the most popular route is the Dover-Calais crossing. Travelling
by ferry is significantly cheaper than most other forms of travel, though less
convenient and more time consuming.
