What to see by foot: Carcassonne
Carcassonne is the only fortified town in Europe that is still inhabited, and
it is best known for its ruins of ancient Cathar castles. Carcassonne was named
a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997.
In 1209, the Catholic Pope launched a massive attack against the Cathar people,
who did not conform to the Catholic religion. Those who managed to escape the
initial onslaught fled to hilltop fortresses, where they spent many months before
being defeated.
Montsegur is the most impressive of these fortresses. It is situated on a 1,200m
outcrop and commands spectacular views of the surrounding area. Alternatively,
Arques has a square tower with four turrets and is a military masterpiece of
the 13thcentury. Villerouge-Termenes is the most convenient to visit, being
located in the middle of the present village; while Termes and Lastours are
additional options for history lovers.
Carcassonne consists of two towns: La Bastide St-Louis (Lower City) and the
older, more evocative, medieval Cite. La Bastide St-Louis does not hold much
of interest for visitors, but the Cite is fascinating for its historical significance,
ancient aesthetics and powerful atmosphere. Its fortifications consist of a
double line of ramparts - the inner walls of which date back to the 5th century.
The Chateau Comtal, which rests on a hill within the Cite, was built in the
12th century by the ruling family of the time. The Basilique St-Nazaire Cathedral
houses one of the oldest organs in southwest France, dating back to the 16th
century.
Those wanting to know more about the crusades, battles and sieges that took
place in the Middle Ages should visit the Musee des Memoires du Moyen Age. The
Pont Vieux affords wonderful views of the Cite and is the oldest bridge in Carcassonne.
It is the only remaining link between the two parts of the city.
The Canal du Midi was built to connect the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean
Sea, and is a marvel of engineering and beauty, with no less than 99 locks.
The canal is lined with trees and wandering along its banks is delightful.
